Sorry, South-siders!
Meeting begins at 10:00 am.
Speaker: David Jewell
Topic: Why a Mac?
Document: Presentation slides [3.9MB PDF]
Many Macs perform in PC environments. In fact, 53% of businesses that
use Macs also use PCs. If your business has a PC, why would you also
want a Mac? What do Macs offer that add benefits and make an investment
in additional hardware and another OS worthwhile?
Presentation items will include (in no particular order):
Current Macs use Intel processors, are Unix "under the hood"
Transition aids (from Win to Mac)
Closed systems: Apple as sole hardware source
Lack of backward compatibility with earlier Macs
"Macs are more expensive than Windows machines"
Compatibility with Windows systems, servers, and Exchange
The Speaker:
David Jewell works at Apple's Deer Park store, helping customers who
use their computers, mobile phones, pods, and pads in their work. He's
been with Apple for six years, and has used personal computers --
including
Apple's -- since 1985.
In addition to his background as a computer user, David has worked for
ComEd, Peoples Energy, and has owned a publishing company.
His history includes thirteen years facilitating organizational change,
twenty-five years in theatre, a Web store experiment, and working as a
typesetter, a union carpenter, and a U.S. Army Signal Corps officer.
He is an Eagle Scout.

Speaker: Conrad Weisert
Topic: Design Patterns and Beyond for Numeric Objects
Document: Conrad Weisert: Object-Oriented Computation in C++ and Java
Despite early expectations, the use of object-oriented programming (OOP) for
computation has declined in the past decade, due largely to:
Emphasis in OOP courses and textbooks on user-interfaces and
containers rather than application-domain objects.
Misinformation in textbooks and articles about operator
overloading and other essential tools.
Growing popularity of Java.
Instead of using modern OOP languages to build Fortran-like programs,
we should
exploit OOP to build robust programs that:
simplify interactions among different numeric types ,
eliminate opportunities for many kinds of program bug,
model physical systems at a level close to the application.
Conrad Weisert will explore the common shortcomings of today's
computational programming and will show examples from his recent book
that illustrate common reusable design patterns for modeling the external world.
Easy-to-understand examples will be shown in C++ and Java, but will not depend on knowledge
of either programming language.
The Speaker:
Conrad Weisert has been using and teaching C++ for two decades,
and is an enthusiastic advocate of OOP. His recent book, Object
Oriented Computation in C++ and Java , Dorset House, ISBN
978-0-932633-63-7 fills a gap in the literature of OOP. He holds an
MS in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) from DePaul
University, and currently teaches object-oriented programming
at Loyola University.

Meeting begins at 10:00 am.
Speaker: Ward Christensen
Topic: WIKIs
Document: APCU Wiki
Quoting Ward:
I have put up the APCU WIKI:
http://WardsDiskSpace.com/pmwikitest/apcu/
and can discuss it, etc.
I decided to put together this Wiki in Feb 2010 as a way for us all to have a place to see [APCU meeting] notes anyone might have taken.
I'm no "expert" but it is an interesting way to put up a web page - or
host one on your own machine for your own use -- or email it to friends,
customers, etc.
As a homework assignment anyone can browse the web for "Wiki on a stick"
or "WOAS" and grab one for themselves - a 1-html-file-wiki.

NOT A LAST SATURDAY!
Speaker: Ward Christensen
Topic: FreeMind - free mind mapping software
Freemind is a wonderful graphical outline program, available from
SourceForge :
FreeMind is a premier free mind-mapping software written in Java. The recent development has hopefully turned it into high productivity tool. We are proud that the operation and navigation of FreeMind is faster than that of MindManager because of one-click "fold / unfold" and "follow link" operations.
So you want to write a completely new metaphysics? Why don't you use FreeMind? You have a tool at hand that remarkably resembles the tray slips of Robert Pirsig, described in his sequel to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance called Lila. Do you want to refactor your essays in a similar way you would refactor software? Or do you want to keep personal knowledge base, which is easy to manage? Why don't you try FreeMind? Do you want to prioritize, know where you are, where you've been and where you are heading, as Stephen Covey would advise you? Have you tried FreeMind to keep track of all the things that are needed for that?

Speaker: Ward Christensen
Topic: AUTO-it: Windows Scripting Language
Yes, it is free.
AutoIT, which is either AUTO I.T. (Information Technology) or AUTO-it (it =
some task) - is a tool for automating tasks within windows.
AutoIT is a scripting language, capable of interacting with windows, files,
directories, the mouse, keyboard, even the internet.
Ward for example has a "close these windows" script for some pop-up ads,
extra cmd.com's left over by Kedit launching external apps, an annoying
"PDA Sync" that pops up every hour when your phone isn't connected, etc.
Another example is a restartable FTP transfer that keeps dropping. Ward's
AutoIT script "keep FTP going" monitors for the "Confirm restarting?"
window, and presses a "Y", and logs in its window, how many restarts have
been done.
Perhaps the best thing about AutoIT is that you can write "real" Windows
programs, (either scripts or stand alone executables) that present a window
capable of most of the familiar "widgets" from radio buttons, progress
bars, input fields, sliders, animated GIFs, images, resizeability (an
advanced topic in itself), etc. As a result, you can learn the concepts of
windows programming(*) in a friendly scriptable language.

Speaker: Alan Sobel
Topic: Update on Display Technology
Document: Alan's Power Point Presentation (COMING!)
Intense competition is driving prices down and performance up in all segments: LCDs, plasma panels (PDPs), projectors, and CRTs. Newer technologies are beginning to appear: organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), field-emission displays (FEDs). LEDs and lasers are becoming real for projection displays, including microprojectors.
All of this is good for consumers and not so good for the battling producers.
This will be a brief survey of the technologies, their strong points, and their (current) limitations, as updated at the recent Society for Information Display clambake.
BIO Alan Sobel has been working on various aspects of display-device and display-system technologies since the late Miocene and has seen many good-looking ideas come and go. He has reported on these for APCU and in other publications over the years.

Special TIME. After LUNCH at CJ Arthur's at noon, meeting begins at 1:00 pm.
Speaker: Conrad Weisert
Topic: UML: "Unified Modeling" or "Unstructured Muddling" Language?
Document: UML: Unified Modeling
The UML is enjoying growing acceptance among I.S. professionals as the preferred set of tools for "analysis and design". It is being endorsed and publicized by leading writers and teachers. It has been blessed as a standard for system modeling by the Object Management Group (OMG). It is assumed to fit especially well with object-oriented techniques. Therefore, any organization involved with systems analysis must recognize the importance of UML and choose:
to embrace it as the main components of its systems analysis methodology,
to reject it in favor of some well-defined practical alternative, or
to integrate selectively the UML's best features into an established mainstream systems analysis methodology.
Packaged with the UML are two non-object-oriented methodology components: use cases and the so-called "Unified Process" life cycle.
Conrad Weisert will examine critically the strengths and weaknesses of UML in comparison with other approaches to systems analysis, emphasizing its suitability for capturing and organizing user requirements and documenting a rigorous system specification. He will offer guidelines for making choices.
