Virtual Meetings - allowing remote people to see/hear/say during an APCU meeting

This might by extension also apply to a truly "virtual meeting" where everyone "calls in from home". Summary of findings: Skype can initiate a group call and add participants; if remote people don't use video the bandwidth might not be a problem.

  • 09/11/14 Ward and Chuck have been talking about it. Ward here just getting some thoughts down:
    • [ ] Check if Skype can do a "group" chat - If not video, how about "audio conferencing"?
    Research follows:
Says "You can share a group call with up to 25 people, anywhere in the world, and if everyone’s on Skype it’s completely free."
    Sounds good! OK: you
    • Have a master machine (say, one at the library)
    • Have each attendee in your contact list; add each to a group
    • Call that group, you get a screen with each attendee's camera image tiled - sort of looks like a high school yearbook.
    • This means a Skype conference needs to be set up in advance, and people can't "call into it" but they CAN skype chat TO the moderator, and be added.
    • I fear the library bandwidth might not handle this; if the remote people did NOT turn on their camera, then that incoming video bandwidth would be spared.
    • [ ] in order for remote people to hear local people, I think a wireless mic would be needed -- or a mic on a long cord, which goes into the computer "hosting" the Skype conference.
    • [ ] Investigate separate web cams, i.e. a laptop with a built-in camera wouldn't easily "point to" items of interest or speakers etc.

  • Background:
    • My best computer buddy is Lloyd Smith in Florida.
    • Chuck G couldn't make the last meeting, but could have remotely attended most of it from home.
    • Some of our members (e.g. Josh) have moved out of the area.
The above are reasons I think it would be great to be able to attend APCU meetings "from home".
